ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy) for plantar fasciitis is a non-evasive option for pain relief from heel pain that is particularly associated with plantar fasciitis. This procedure involves shockwaves, or sound waves, being directed from outside the body and can be directed onto the heel of the foot. Sending shockwaves into a patient’s foot is intended to stimulate the speed up of the body’s own healing process. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is also capable of over-stimulating nerves, reducing sensitivity and pain in the foot.

ESWT for plantar fasciitis usually involves the patient reclining, either in a chair or on a bed, as the technician begins to administer the shockwaves into the area of the inflamed fascia. Stretching:

Upper Calf

  • Stride forward and lean against a wall
  • The front leg should be bent, back leg straight
  • The heel of the back leg should remain in contact with the floor
  • Ease forward until the patient feels the stretch in the upper calf

 

Lower Calf

  • Lean against a wall as for stretching the upper calf
  • The heel of the back leg should remain in contact with the floor
  • Bend both knees, and sink the hips to shift the weight onto the back foot
  • As the patient sinks down, he or she should begin to feel the stretch in the lower calf

It is also recommend that the patient strengthens posture muscles, weakened lower limb and foot muscles can mean that the lower body doesn’t maintain correct alignment when the patient runs. This often results in increased tension and stress on the achilles tendons, resulting in tendinitis.

  1. Stand on the edge of a step with the toes and the ball of the foot on the step and your heels hanging off the step
  2. Then go up onto every toe using both feet
  3. Lift one foot off the step
  4. Lower down on the other foot
  5. Repeat.
