Piriformis syndrome symptoms occur due to the piriformis muscle compressing the sciatic nerve; these muscles are found in the buttocks near the hip joint.
The main symptoms that are associated to this syndrome are:
- A pain usually followed by a tingling sensation and numbness in the buttocks.
- Reduced motion of the hip joint
- A dull ache in the buttock
- Pain down the back of the thigh, calf and foot (sciatica)
- Pain when walking up stairs or inclines
The symptoms become worse after prolonged sitting, walking and running.
