Shin Splint

A shin splint also known as tibial stress syndrome is not a single medical condition in itself rather a complication by other problems such as irritated muscles, hairline fractures of the bone or overpronation (flat foot)  which is when walking the arch of the foot collapses causing tendons and muscle to overstretch.

The symptoms of shin splints usually cause a dull and an aching pain in front of the lower leg in some cases the pain may cause the leg muscles sensitive to touch and may irritate the nerves within the foot.
To treat shin splints is simple:

  1. Apply ice to the affect area for about twenty to thirty minutes for four hours the pain will eventually dissipate over a few days.
  2. Taking some anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen may help reduce inflammation of the leg.
  3.   If you suffer from “flat foot” buying arch supports for you shoes will prevent and also aid in the healing process.
  4. A neoprene sleeve can be used to support the leg.
  5. Physical therapy to allow the leg to regain its normal function through gentle exercise.

The best prevention for these types of injuries are wearing good shoes that provide support and padding, warm up before engaging in physical activities and try to avoid working out on hard surfaces such as concrete.
