Treatment for bunions is to help levitate bunions in the patient, a bunions is an enlargement of the joint which is located at the base of the big toe this cause it to grow outwards instead of the normal straight forward position.
Treatment of bunions can involve two methods non-surgical which involves the following:
- The use of anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen which will reduce the swelling.
- A bunion pad this is usually made of a gel like substance this is used to prevent the bunion from rubbing in the inside of the shoe which will ease pain and inflammation.
- Orthotics can also be placed with the shoes to help realign the bones of the foot this will relive pressure and pain however it is important that the patient finds one that fits correctly or it may be ineffective.
- Daily application of ice packs may help relieve pain and lessen inflammation.
Surgical approach usually involves the osteotomy method in which the doctors remove the boney lump and realign the bones inside the big toe. In addition to this distal tissue realignment can be implemented to correct deformity and improve stability of the foot.
