Sprained foot treatment

When the foot is sprain there can be a wide vartiy of treatment, however sprained foot treatment should always consist of:

  • Resting the injured foot and avoid moving the foot or placing weight on it. Patient should refrain from physical activity.
  • Place an ice pack to the foot to prevent or reduce swelling and pain. Use a cloth-covered ice pack for 20 minutes four to eight times a day. Using ice for longer than 20 minutes can result in injury.
  • Compressing the injured foot by wrapping it with a compression bandage, compression helps to prevent swelling. Wrapping too tightly can restrict the flow of blood.

Elevating the injured foot at least 12 inches can help reduce swelling. Doctors may recommend anti-inflammatory drugs, to treat pain and swelling.
